VettCode Deployment Checklist - Production Fix
✅ Changes Pushed to GitHub (commit: 892fa1b)
Files Modified:
- lib/subscription.ts - Fixed invalid ObjectId error
- lib/ai-chat.ts - User-friendly error messages
- lib/ai-providers.ts - Enhanced provider logging
- docs/PRODUCTION_ERRORS_FIXED.md - Complete error documentation
- docs/AI_CHAT_FIXES_SUMMARY.md - Implementation history
🔥 CRITICAL: Required Actions Before AI Chat Works
1. Set Environment Variables in Vercel
Go to: https://vercel.com → Your Project → Settings → Environment Variables
Add these (REQUIRED):
OPENROUTER_API_KEY=sk-or-v1-your_key_here
Get your key from:
- Sign up/login at https://openrouter.ai/
- Go to Keys section
- Create new API key
- Copy and paste into Vercel
Optional (but recommended for backup):
GROQ_API_KEY=gsk_your_key_here
Get from: https://console.groq.com/
2. Verify MongoDB Connection
Ensure this is set correctly in Vercel:
MONGODB_URI=mongodb+srv://username:password@cluster.mongodb.net/vettcode
3. Redeploy
After setting environment variables:
- Vercel will automatically trigger a rebuild
- OR manually redeploy from Vercel dashboard
- OR push any small commit to trigger rebuild
✅ What Was Fixed (Already Done)
1. Invalid ObjectId Error
Before:
BSONError: input must be a 24 character hex string
After:
- ✅ Validates ObjectId format before database query
- ✅ Gracefully falls back to free plan on invalid format
- ✅ Logs warnings for debugging
- ✅ No crashes or 500 errors
2. No AI Providers Error
Before:
Error: No AI providers available
(Crash with 500 error)
After:
- ✅ Falls back to template-based overview
- ✅ Shows user-friendly error messages
- ✅ Logs provider availability at startup
- ✅ No crashes - seamless fallback
3. User-Facing Errors
Before:
- Raw technical errors shown to users
- Stack traces in chat UI
After:
- ✅ Friendly messages like "VettCode Coach is temporarily offline"
- ✅ Helpful guidance on what to do
- ✅ No technical jargon
📊 How to Verify the Fix
Step 1: Check Build Logs
After deployment, check Vercel logs for:
[AI-PROVIDER-REGISTRY] ✓ OpenRouter provider registered
[AI-PROVIDER-REGISTRY] Total providers registered: 1
If you see:
[AI-PROVIDER-REGISTRY] ✗ OpenRouter provider NOT available (missing OPENROUTER_API_KEY)
Then the API key is not set correctly.
Step 2: Test AI Chat
- Go to https://vettedcodewe.vercel.app
- Run a security scan
- Click "AI Overview" tab
- Should see either:
- ✅ AI-generated overview (if API key is set)
- ✅ Template overview (if no API key, but no error!)
Step 3: Test Chat Feature
- Type a message in chat
- Should see either:
- ✅ AI response (if API key is set)
- ✅ Friendly error message (if no API key)
- ❌ Should NOT see: crash, 500 error, or technical stack trace
🎯 Current Status
| Issue | Status | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Invalid ObjectId crash | ✅ Fixed | Validates format before DB query |
| No AI providers crash | ✅ Fixed | Falls back to templates gracefully |
| Raw errors shown to users | ✅ Fixed | User-friendly messages |
| Duplicate AI requests | ✅ Fixed | (Fixed in previous commit) |
| Response parsing crash | ✅ Fixed | (Fixed in previous commit) |
| Free model costs | ✅ Fixed | $0.00 for :free models |
| 13 Free models | ✅ Added | VettCode branded names |
| Request correlation IDs | ✅ Added | Full tracing in logs |
| API keys in production | ⚠️ ACTION REQUIRED | Must set in Vercel |
| Frontend response truncation | ⏳ Next | Need to debug |
| Server-side deduplication | ⏳ Next | Prevent duplicate calls |
| Retry button UI | ⏳ Next | Manual retry for failures |
🚀 Deployment Steps
Immediate (Do Now):
- ✅ Code pushed to GitHub (done)
- ⏳ Set
OPENROUTER_API_KEYin Vercel - ⏳ Wait for automatic rebuild
- ⏳ Test AI chat on production
Next Iteration:
- Debug frontend response truncation issue
- Add server-side request deduplication
- Implement retry button UI
- Add loading states for provider fallbacks
📝 Notes
Why No API Keys = No Crash Now
Previously, when no providers were available:
Error: No AI providers available → 500 crash
Now:
No providers → Log warning → Use template → User sees overview
This means the app works even without AI providers configured!
Template Fallback is Actually Good
- Templates are instant (no API latency)
- Templates are free (no cost)
- Templates work offline
- Templates are consistent
AI enhances the experience, but templates ensure it never breaks.
🔍 Monitoring After Deployment
What to Watch:
- Build logs - Check for provider registration
- Runtime logs - Watch for "[AI-CHAT]" errors
- Error rates - Should drop significantly
- User feedback - Ask users if they see errors
Success Criteria:
- ✅ No 500 errors on /api/scans/[scanId]/chat
- ✅ AI overview loads (either AI or template)
- ✅ Chat responds (either AI or friendly message)
- ✅ No crashes from invalid ObjectIds
- ✅ No crashes from missing providers
