VettCode Scan Persistence Implementation Summary

Overview

Successfully implemented persistent scan reports connecting VettCode CLI → API → Database → ImageKit → Web Dashboard, creating a unified ecosystem where CLI scans are automatically synced to the user's VettCode account.


Architecture Audit Results

WEB Auth: NextAuth with Google OAuth + Credentials

Implementation Details

Phase 1: API Endpoints (WEB)

Updated: /api/upload (POST)

  • Now requires CLI authentication via Bearer token
  • Validates scan result format and size (max 10MB)
  • Sanitizes sensitive data:
    • Redacts secrets ([REDACTED] for SECRET category findings)
    • Normalizes file paths to remove usernames:
      • C:\Users\username\ → removed
      • /home/username/ → removed
      • /Users/username/ → removed
  • Associates scan with authenticated user (server-side user ID resolution)
  • Stores scan in MongoDB
  • Uploads sanitized report to ImageKit
  • Returns scanId and URL

Updated: /api/scans (GET)

  • Supports both CLI (Bearer token) and Web (session) authentication
  • Filters scans by authenticated user only
  • Supports pagination (limit/skip parameters)
  • Returns scan summaries (no full findings)

Created: /api/scans/[scanId] (GET)

  • Supports both CLI and Web authentication
  • Verifies scan ownership before returning data
  • Returns 404 (not 403) if scan doesn't belong to user
  • Returns full scan data including all findings

Phase 2: CLI Integration

Updated: CLI/src/lib/api-client.ts

  • Added uploadScan() method
  • Uses Bearer token authentication
  • Handles 401 (expired session), 413 (too large), and network errors
  • Returns scanId and URL on success

Updated: CLI/src/cli.ts - Scan Command

  • After successful scan, automatically uploads to VettCode API
  • Upload happens for both JSON output and regular terminal output
  • Non-blocking with ora spinner
  • Graceful failure handling:
    • If upload fails, scan is still successful
    • Local report is preserved
    • User sees clear error message
    • Offline scans still work
  • Displays web URL for viewing detailed report

Phase 3: Web Dashboard Pages

Created: /dashboard/scans - Scan History Page

  • Lists all scans for authenticated user
  • Shows:
    • Scan path
    • Severity badges (Critical, High, Medium, Low counts)
    • Timestamp (relative time)
    • Total findings
  • Empty state with CLI quick start instructions
  • Loading and error states
  • Hover effects and click-through to detail page

  • Full scan results display
  • Header with scan path and timestamp
  • Summary cards for each severity level
  • Findings list showing:
    • Severity and category badges
    • Title and message
    • File path and line number
    • Confidence level
    • Collapsible metadata (CWE, rule ID, references)

  • Loading, error, and empty states

Updated: Sidebar Navigation

  • Changed "Security" to "Security Scans" under SECURE section
  • Now a working link (removed comingSoon flag)

Security Implementation

Authentication

✅ CLI upload requires valid Bearer token
✅ Server resolves userId from CLI credential (never trusts client)
✅ Web scan viewing requires NextAuth session
✅ Both CLI and Web can view scans (same user)

Authorization

✅ Scans filtered by authenticated user
✅ Cross-user access blocked
✅ Scan detail verifies ownership before returning data
✅ Returns 404 (not 403) to avoid leaking scan existence

Data Sanitization

Secrets Redacted: SECRET category findings have values replaced with [REDACTED]
Paths Normalized: Local usernames and absolute paths removed
Size Limited: 10MB maximum upload size
Format Validated: Required fields checked before processing

Privacy

✅ User A cannot see User B's scans
✅ User A cannot access User B's ImageKit URLs through guessing
✅ Database is source of truth for authorization
✅ Local paths don't expose usernames

Offline Behavior

Testing Required

Authentication Tests

  • Authenticated CLI can upload scan
  • Unauthenticated CLI cannot upload
  • Expired CLI credential returns 401
  • Revoked CLI credential cannot upload

Authorization Tests

  • User A can view their own scans
  • User A cannot view User B's scans
  • User A cannot access User B's scan by guessing ID
  • Scan list only shows user's own scans

Sanitization Tests

  • Secrets are redacted in uploaded reports
  • Local paths are normalized (no usernames)
  • File paths remain useful for debugging

Upload Tests

  • Valid scan uploads successfully
  • Malformed scan rejected (400)
  • Oversized scan rejected (413)
  • Network failure doesn't break local scan
  • Duplicate upload doesn't create duplicate scans

Web Tests

  • Scan history loads correctly
  • Empty state shows for new users
  • Loading state displays during fetch
  • Error state handles failures
  • Scan detail page loads findings
  • Back button returns to history
  • Severity badges display correctly
  • Timestamps show relative time

CLI Tests

  • Scan completes and uploads automatically

  • Offline scans still work (upload fails gracefully)
  • Complete user data isolation
  • Reused existing infrastructure (Scan model, ImageKit, Auth)

Architecture:

  • ONE unified VettCode ecosystem
  • CLI and Web are interfaces to same user workspace
  • Database is source of truth for ownership
  • ImageKit stores sanitized report artifacts
  • Secure authentication and authorization throughout

Next Steps:

  1. Deploy WEB changes to Vercel (auto-deploy from GitHub ✅)
  2. Test complete end-to-end flow:
    • CLI login → scan → upload → view in web
  3. Test cross-user data isolation
  4. Verify sanitization works correctly
